Cape Hatteras Light, in the Outer Banks of NC, is the most recognized, photographed, painted, read about and admired lighthouse in North America and is a National Historic Landmark. This photograph was taken along the shore in 1998, the year before the light was moved inland for preservation.

The first Ocracoke Lighthouse was built in 1803 near Blackbeard's hideout. In 1818 it was destroyed by lightning and was replaced by the current light in 1823 near Ocracoke Village. Ocracoke Light remains among the oldest
lighthouses still active on the southern coast.

In the early years of the Civil War, this lighthouse was controlled by Union troops. However, in 1861, Confederate troops slipped into the lighthouse and blew it up. The current Bodie Island Lighthouse, just south of Nags Head, was built in the model of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.
